CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Climate Justice Feminist Participatory Action Research for Change!

Support to Rural, Indigenous, Migrant, Urban Poor Women’s Organisations

Amplifying Voices, Strengthening Feminist Movements for Climate Justice

 APWLD invites grassroots women’s rights organisations and movements to take part in this exciting Climate Justice Feminist Participatory Action Research (CJ FPAR) programme that aims to develop tools and resources that support rural, indigenous, migrant and urban poor women (RIMUP) to monitor, engage and influence climate policies that impact on them.

cj-fpar

APWLD believes that empowering women and supporting women’s local movements is essential to both gender equality and effective climate, just responses. It is critical that women are able to collectively understand, document, discuss the impacts and design their own solutions. To address the need to increase the evidence-base advocacy with women as vocal and effective advocates in human rights, APWLD will support eight to ten local organisations to conduct Climate Justice Feminist Participatory Action Research. Organisations will be selected to work with APWLD for 1.5 years (January 2017 – June 2018) to document:

  1. The impact of climate change impacts, policies and projects on rural, indigenous, migrant and urban poor (RIMUP) women at the local or country level. Research projects that focus on the theme “Climate Displacement” will be prioritised.
  2. Community-owned solutions and demand for climate justice.

Priority will be given to research projects focusing on communities displaced or potentially displaced due to climate change. Climate Displacement includes (but not limited to):

  • Displacement caused by natural disasters (floods, typhoons, etc.);
  • Displacement caused by slow onset impacts (droughts, sea level rise, salinisation of soil, etc.);
  • Displacement programmes/projects that relate to climate change (implementation of market-based mechanisms programmes such as REDD+, fossil fuel exploitation projects such as coal mining, fracking, etc.).

 Researchers will be introduced to a human rights based approach to climate change; feminist participatory action research methods; advocacy and campaigning for change. They will access training in international human rights standards, the status of climate negotiations and rights-based approaches.

APWLD will provide a small grant to the selected organisations to employ a young woman researcher and carry out the research including salary and on-costs with the approximate amount of USD 10,000. Research partners will need to appoint a mentor to assist this young woman researcher throughout this research programme. APWLD will also support the young women researcher and their mentors to participate in at least 3 capacity building workshops and provide advocacy or network opportunities throughout the year.

Selection criteria of the research partners:

APWLD will select local organisations who will lead the FPAR on climate justice in eight to ten countries in Asia Pacific. Organisations based in Pacific are strongly encouraged to apply.

As one of the objectives of this programme is to support and strengthen small grassroots based organisations, this programme is not suitable for international NGOs and organisations with established funding support.

We are seeking non-governmental, non-profit, grassroots based organisations that:

  • Committed towards the enjoyment and realisation of the human rights of women at community level in Asia Pacific, particularly of the most marginalised (young, rural, indigenous, migrant, Dalit women and/or women in other minority groups)[1] and climate justice;
  • Work directly with the local grassroots women in the community level; either the young researcher or the mentor must come from the community in which the research takes place;
  • Committed to conducing the 1.5-year-Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) process between January 2017 and June 2018;
  • Committed to feminist participatory methodologies that increase democratic participation and leadership of marginalised women in the research;
  • Can provide the appointed researcher with internet and computer access for regular online communication with APWLD secretariat and online training.

APWLD will consider the following when selecting the organisations for this project:

  • Sub-regional representation;
  • Recommendations/ references by members of AWPLD in their country;
  • Theme of the research project (priority will be given to projects that focus on climate migrants/climate displacement).
