APWLD is inviting young women migrants and women migrants’ rights defenders
to apply for:
Feminist Legal Literacy and Organising Training 2024
Deadline For Applications: 30 September 2024
Background
Women migrants are often experiencing human rights violations and have limited or no access to justice due to their vulnerability as migrants. The discriminatory or inadequate social policies, lack of information available for migrants, lack of protection for complainants and witnesses, language barriers often prevent migrants from obtaining redress and seeking justice when violations happen. These barriers are just a few among other barriers, such as limited knowledge and understanding of the law within the destination place. It is crucial for women migrants to understand the legal framework protecting their rights and have the capacity to analyse the law and policies to advocate for their rights.
In addition, women migrants often found difficulties in raising their issues and concerns as well as their demands due to those limitations and barriers. It is also crucial for women migrants to be able to organise themselves in order to gain support and advocacy opportunities as well as to take action in defending their rights and accessing justice. However, the distinct places of living and sometimes isolation gave more challenges for women migrants to organise themselves. Learning from experiences, APWLD identifies some specific challenges and barriers faced by women migrants and finds it important to contextualise the APWLD feminist legal analysis into migration issues and develop different strategies for migrants organising.
