Mobilise for Climate Justice

As COP 21 is around the corner, civil societies and women’s rights groups around the world are organising various actions and mobilisations to build pressure on governments to adopt a fair and just new climate agreement in Paris, from November 30 to December 11, 2015.

We, women of the global south, bear the unequal burden of climate change though we have contributed the least to global warming. Meanwhile, developed countries who have the highest responsibility for emitting green house gases emissions and causing the climate chaos are reluctant to take urgent climate action. We need to tell this truth and are calling for a mass movement to demand a legally binding climate agreement that hold the climate perpetrators accountable and deliver gender and climate justice. As part of building a global climate justice movement, APWLD developed the proposal of organising protests in front of developed countries embassies in the Asia-Pacific region. The mobilisation is entitled “Mobilising the voices of the most affected towards Paris” and take place in the framework of the global campaign Women’s Global Call for Climate Justice, a worldwide women’s movement for climate justice. to guide you in organising a climate justice mobilisation in your own country. 

Objective of the mobilisation: To protest in front of developed countries embassies to demand climate justice. Although the main idea of the mobilisation is to gather in front of developed countries embassies, we know that in some national or specific contexts, such mobilisations cannot happen (either because of security reasons or geographical location of the mobilisations, etc.) We have anticipated such situations, and we are proposing other options in the toolkit to allow you organising an alternative mobilisation.

Date of the mobilisation:

Civil society around the world are organising globally coordinated days of actions actions in Paris and other cities right before the COP 21 on the week-end of 28 November and 29 November. On 12 December, at the end of the international talks, civil disobedience actions are being organised in Paris while national actions are encouraged. You can choose the date that best suits your national context for organising a mobilisation in your country. Basically, the mobilisations right before COP 21 would focus on putting pressure on governments to demand a fair and ambitious Paris climate agreement and the ones at the closing of COP 21 would focus on demonstrate the power of the people and the continuity of the climate justice movement.
